BioNTech chief executive Ugur Sahin said he was confident the Covid-19 vaccine co-developed by his company would be effective against a variant that has emerged in Britain. Countries across the globe shut their borders to Britain on Monday due to fears about a highly infectious new coronavirus strain, causing travel chaos and raising the prospect of food shortages in the United Kingdom. Adding it was more important that his employees get the vaccine so they can continue to do their jobs. In the first seven days of the vaccine being rolled out nearly 140,000 people were given coronavirus vaccine jabs. The new strain has been named VUI-202012/01, the first variant under investigation in December.
