The VW diesel emissions cheat continues to billow smoke and statements by VW executives continue to cloud the ‘matter.’On January 7th the Feds nabbed senior VW executive Oliver Schmidt at Miami airport just before his escape back to Germany. Schmidt had headed VW’s regulatory compliance office in the U.S. from 2014 through 2015 and had unwisely come to Florida for vacation. A VW statement quoted Hans Dieter Pötsch, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen Group, as stating ‘We are no longer the same company we were 16 months ago. The Supervisory Board and the Management Board have faced up to past actions.’Let’s take a look at recent company statements. Along with the press release about the $4.3B settlement was a quote by VW CEO Matthias Müller, ‘Volkswagen deeply regrets the behavior that gave rise to the diesel crisis.
