VDOT uses new system to ease I-66 bottleneck

[Why those I-66 signs tell you what to do]The planners think they can help with one part of a larger problem. They think they have found one at the Route 28 interchange in Centreville, a notorious spot for slow traffic during rush hours. It’s the queue of slow-moving traffic that forms on weekday mornings as drivers heading west on I-66 line up to exit onto northbound Route 28. After launching their Active Traffic Management system on Interstate 66 last fall, Virginia transportation planners have been looking for more ways to use the electronic communication system to improve traffic flow. The electronic message board on the left side of the gantry reinforces the setup by directing drivers to the right lane for the Route 28 northbound exit.
