Utkal Express derailment: Communities put memories of 2013 riots behind, join hands in rescue operations

KHATAULI: On one side of the railway track in Khatauli, where 14 coaches of Kalinga Utkal Express derailed on Saturday, is the Hindu-dominated Jagat colony. On the other side is Nai Abaadi colony, which predominantly houses Muslim population. Ever since riots broke out in Muzaffarnagar in 2013, tension between the two communities here has been palpable. "Most of the Muslims that stay in Nai Abaadi colony work as labourers in nearby factories. Local residents said that while residents of Jagat colony took shocked passengers to their homes, people from Nai Abaadi colony rushed to get equipment to cut open the bogies.
