If we can’t beat them, then we need to do a better job at disease surveillance, catch them before they flare up and swiftly to stamp them out. Unfortunately, our global and country disease surveillance systems are not fine-tuned to catch viruses before they slip out. The disease surveillance systems — the systems meant to warn us of a looming infectious disease — are slow and passive. AI-powered surveillance systems must shine a bright light on places that are likely to hatch out disease outbreaks and keep them on their radar. Here is my point: Only the computing power of artificial intelligence can feed on disease surveillance data and send out early warning signals of an impending disease outbreak.
