Two new studies linking nitrates in drinking water with adverse birth effects show the urgent need to reduce acceptable nitrate levels, Green MP Eugenie Sage says. The studies showed a link between consumption of nitrates in drinking water during pregnancy and both preterm and underweight births. A Californian study of several births by the same woman helped eliminate other possible reasons for adverse birth effects, including hypertension and obesity.
