Urban technology is the next great frontier in the digital revolution — think about the most successful tech startups in recent years, from ride-hailing to co-working to co-living. Global investment is quickly steering toward urban innovation, with billions pouring in around the world. Sidewalk’s proposal calls for the establishment of an “urban innovation cluster,” along the lines of our other successful accelerators and clusters in the Toronto-Kitchener-Waterloo corridor such as Communitech, Ryerson University’s The DMZ, and Techstars. Their proposal also calls for a new venture investment fund, and an Urban Innovation Institute to continue to accelerate progress. Just as important, this would make Toronto even more of a magnet for tech employees around the world.
