Energy Minister Megan Woods says an uptick in climate-heating gases from electricity and heat production proves the country must stop burning coal and gas to make electricity. The Government’s latest emissions inventory says greenhouse gases rose 2 per cent between 2018 and 2019 to reach 82.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. WARWICK SMITH/Stuff School children continued to strike for increased action on climate change on Friday. Quarterly emissions figures from Statistics NZ, released last week, showed emissions fell by 4.8 per cent in 2020, largely because of Covid. However, the quarterly Stats NZ figures showed a strong rebound in the last quarter of 2020, suggesting any impact from Covid might be short-lived.
