The MWD board voted unanimously to adopt the emergency measures to “reduce non-essential water use” in certain areas. The State Water Project delivers water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta to farmlands and cities to the south. The MWD imports water from the State Water Project and the Colorado River, serving 26 public water agencies across six counties that supply 19 million people, about half the state’s population. The governor also directed the state water board to consider a ban on watering “nonfunctional” grass at businesses and other properties. In addition to water from the state project, Los Angeles receives water from the Eastern Sierra and the Colorado River.
