Throughout this conference season we’ve heard slogans such as “For the many, not the few” and “A country that works for everyone”, which may play well to party bases but seem meaningless and – in one particular case – literally fall apart in practice. While it may seem an age ago to the prime minister, just over a year ago, she claimed, on the steps of Downing Street, she wanted to reach out and help those who are just about managing. Well, given the turbulent time the PM has had recently, backing my Bill to ban unpaid trial work periods would be precisely the opportunity to help. I hope she will urge her MPs to do the same too.
