Unlocking the potential of women in off-grid energy


IRENA recently published Renewable energy and jobs: Annual Review 2024 which examines the socio-economic impacts of transitioning to renewable energy, including:Creating employment opportunities,Leveraging domestic capacities throughout the renewable energy value chain,Promoting women’s participation in the renewable energy sector,Identifying education and training needs and opportunities, andmodelling the impact of energy transition pathways on jobs, gross domestic product and human welfare by 2050. Although data on DRE jobs remain limited, certain technologies, such as off-grid solar PV, show particular promise. “IRENA’s solar PV gender survey reveals that women constitute 38% of the workforce across all roles in Africa’s solar PV industry. “Women working in off-grid solar PV often face discrimination and biases from employers and customers. Achieving a just energy transition with a diverse workforce inclusive of womenTouching on the just energy transition, the report indicates that achieving a just energy transition and unlocking the job-creation potential of renewable energy relies on several factors.
