CALGARY—University of Calgary researchers have found a way to make essential imaging tests safer for people at risk of acute kidney injury. Every year, millions of people undergo medical tests and procedures, such as coronary angiography, which use intravascular contrast dyes. But for eight per cent of Albertans who go in for a heart procedure, the dye can cause an acute kidney injury. During a five-year study, the University of Calgary researchers used high-powered microscopes to map out — in real time — the dye’s progression through the kidneys. “We also identified a protein that’s on (the kidney cell) that is like a pump that reabsorbs the dye,” Muruve said.
