copyright Steve Niedorf 2012UnitedHealth Group is investing more than $8 million into a consortium of historically black colleges and universities to meet the growing demand for data analytics experts. The money will fund the launch of a new AUCC Data Science Initiative, which “will offer technical classes for students who want to specialize in data science or learn data analysis to give them a competitive edge when they look for jobs in their field of study,” UnitedHealth said in an announcement Tuesday. In healthcare, data is critical to the move away from fee-for-service medicine to value-based models that pay doctors and hospitals to improve healthcare outcomes. “Technology in general, and data science in particular, are critical to better meeting the needs of our customers,” UnitedHealth Group CEO David Wichmann said. "Data Scientists are defined as practitioners with sufficient knowledge in the areas of business needs, domain knowledge, analytical skills, and software and systems engineering to manage the end-to-end data processes in the data life cycle."
