The juice of a fruit once thought to cause madness — the tomato — got United Airlines in hot water with travelers last week. United decided to cut tomato juice from its selection of in-flight beverages, but quickly reversed its decision after a torrent of complaints on social media. At the time, Lufthansa customers sipped 1.7 million liters of tomato juice each year — just under 450,000 gallons. Scientists determined that additives like salt and pepper in tomato would make the juice taste better than other beverages. While tomato juice is often from concentrate and contains preservatives so it can be stored at room temperature, the beverages that younger passengers crave require refrigeration.
