Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson plans to buy a pair of boats and fit them out as “Littoral Strike Ships”. Under the Government’s blueprint, the National Shipbuilding Strategy, only “Royal Navy warships” have to be constructed in Britain. Ministers are already under pressure over building two, possibly three, Fleet Solid Support ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. Union chiefs urged ministers to hand the Littoral Strike Ship deal to a British yard, as the £6.2billion contract to build two Navy aircraft carriers ends.
