The 200 union members - about half the port's staff - began a 13-day strike yesterday, after negotiations with the port company broke down over pay and work safety. Union organiser John Kerr said the strike notices for tomorrow and Friday have been withdrawn, and hoped the company would return to the negotiating table. The Lyttelton port company has been approached for comment.
