NEW DELHI: India should have a uniform structure of road tax for vehicles across states, a government panel set up to recommend transport reforms has proposed.A uniform tax structure will put a check on people registering their vehicles in low tax states and running them in other states, the group of ministers ( GoM ) on transport constituted by the road transport and highways ministry said in a meeting held in Guwahati on Thursday.“This would also bring necessary relief to genuine cases requiring transfer of vehicles,” said a ministry official, who did not wish to be identified. In order to promote alternative fuel for vehicles, the panel has proposed liberalisation of permit system for electric vehicles . It has also recommended raising the tax on diesel vehicles by 2% while lowering the tax on electric vehicles. The panel has also recommended a national bus and taxi permit on the lines of such a permit for goods transport.
