A German exchange student didn’t expect a lesson in how to shelter from earthquakes on her trip to Christchurch 10 years ago. Katharina Mueller got a hard lesson in earthquake survival when she was an exchange student at Avonside Girls’ High School in September 2010. She left Christchurch in December 2010, so missed the February 2011 earthquake. “The ‘city centre’ was only car parks, our house had to be taken down, just like my school and many, many other buildings. Since her Christchurch exchange trip, she has volunteered in Namibia, worked for the United Nations in New York City, and travelled in South America.
