Unemployment doubled during lockdown, new study says

Researchers say unemployment doubled during the lockdown, and it could be higher than the Government currently reports. A new study says the estimated unemployment rate doubled from 5.3 per cent immediately prior to lockdown to 10.3 per cent by the third week of lockdown. Treasury expects unemployment to peak in September at 9.6 per cent, around when the newly extended wage subsidy runs out. Monique Ford/Stuff 2002 people were surveyed on their work, wellbeing and family wellbeing during the lockdown. Perhaps unsurprisingly, essential workers were more likely to feel stress and anger during the lockdown.
