Unemployment declines, underemployment up in April


MANILA, Philippines — The proportion of unemployed Filipinos slightly dropped in April, the government reported on Tuesday. Unemployment rate in April was at 5.5 percent, below the 5.7 percent recorded in the same month last year. The latest figure was equivalent to 2.36 million jobless Filipinos, lower than the 2.44 million registered a year ago. Among regions, Ilocos Region (7.3 percent), CALABARZON (6.6 percent), and the National Capital Region (6.4 percent) posted the highest unemployment rates. Overall, the country’s labor force participation stood at 60.9 percent as of April, above the 61.4 percent logged last year.
