Undercover Boss is a show where high-level executives of major companies disguise themselves as employees of their own businesses, befriend fellow workers and live a few days in their lives. The shows end with the boss revealing themselves to the employees and typically rewards the ones the boss liked most with a gift or a promotion. “I know that’s a cliche to say I had a love/hate relationship with it, but that’s my relationship with Undercover Boss,” he said. But the underlying message of Undercover Boss is that they’re always watching. Harter is currently working on his second paper on the topic of Undercover Boss, which he plans to discuss at the 2019 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences.
