After a speech in London, the prime minister faced repeated questions about cuts to policing, including the number of armed officers. She told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme policing cuts had been needed when May became home secretary. “We have seen a protection or an increase in the budget for counter-terrorism policing,” she said. “The police service is in crisis as a result of the cuts,” he told Sky News. The number of specialist armed police officers fell from a peak of 6,796 in 2010 to 5,639 in 2016.
