Umpire Angel Hernandez, right, claimed that “less qualified, white individuals” were given World Series umpiring assignments instead of him. (Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images)Veteran umpire Angel Hernandez filed a lawsuit against Major League Baseball on Monday, claiming that he has been repeatedly passed over for professional advancement, fitting into a broader pattern of racial discrimination. Hernandez’s suit also alleges that MLB executive Joe Torre’s personal “animosity” toward him has contributed to a noticeable downturn in his fortunes. The 55-year-old Hernandez, who was born in Cuba, has been an MLB umpire since 1993, and he worked the 2002 and 2005 World Series. Crew chiefs act as supervisors for the three other umpires during games, and all umpires earn greater pay for World Series assignments.
