Uganda’s foreign minister urged to quit over alleged bribe

KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s foreign minister faced growing calls for his resignation Thursday following allegations in the United States that he accepted a bribe shortly after finishing his term as president of the U.N. General Assembly. Prosecutors said the bribe paid to Kutesa was meant to secure business advantages for an unidentified energy company. Ugandan lawmaker Moses Adome, a ruling party member, said Kutesa should “resign or step aside” to protect the country’s image abroad. Officials should not hold important posts “just because they are related or so close to the president,” he said. But Museveni later appointed Kutesa to another cabinet post, and he has served as foreign minister since 2005.
