As someone who has followed the auto industry—and auto stocks—for more than 25 years, this tragic event struck home. Tesla's Autopilot is considered a Level 2 system, and Tesla does not have the resources to even get to Level 4, in my opinion. Governments around the globe need to understand a world in which Level 4 autonomous driving is common and Level 5 is achievable. To think that Tesla could match that functionality with the eight cameras currently installed on new Teslas is complete fantasy. Sadly, there will likely be additional fatalities along the way, but that will only increase the resources needs for autonomous driving, not lower them.
