Uber Technologies Inc. is taking some more leaps into developing and testing self-driving vehicles. The San Francisco-based ride-hailing company will start ferrying Pittsburgh passengers in self-driving cars in the next several weeks. In Pittsburgh, autonomous Ford Fusions will have human backup drivers but will transport passengers just like normal Uber vehicles. Passengers will be able to request the self-driving cars, an Uber spokesman said. Thursday’s announcements signal Uber’s intent to establish itself in the field of autonomous vehicle development, according to Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst at Edmunds.com.
