All square heading down the 18th, Thomas hit a stunning tee shot to pile on the pressure and McIlroy’s drive plugged in a fairway bunker, forcing the four-time major winner to attempt to play out sideways. McIlroy could not escape the sand at the first attempt, found water with his third shot and, with Thomas close in two, eventually conceded on the fairway after failing to hole out for an unlikely five.
