The Trump administration suspended all commercial passenger and cargo flights to Venezuela on Wednesday in light of worsening safety conditions, recent social unrest and political turmoil engulfing the South American nation. Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan determined that “conditions in Venezuela threaten the safety and security of passengers, aircraft, and crew," according to a DHS statement. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo approved the suspension and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao implemented it. American Airlines was the last to halt its operations in March after the State Department warned travelers to stay away from the country. The Department of Homeland Security said the suspension will remain in effect until conditions in Venezuela improve.
