Forty-three US lawmakers have urged the Trump administration to reimpose travel bans on Myanmar military leaders and prepare targeted sanctions against those responsible for the crackdown against Rohingya in the Rakhine state. Both Republican and Democratic members of the House of Representatives sent a signed letter to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson over the issue earlier this week, reports Reuters. “The world can’t just stand idly by and be witness to the atrocities that are being reported in the area [Myanmar],” Tillerson told Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies in a recent interview. More than 582,000 Rohingya refugees have entered Bangladesh since late August, escaping a brutal campaign of terror perpetrated by the Myanmar Army. Myanmar army’s actions in Rakhine state has been termed as a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing” by the United Nations.
