A Thursday report from the Commerce Department showed the US economy accelerated at a brisk 6.4 percent annual rate in the first quarter of 2021. Business investment rose at a strong annual rate of nearly 10 percent, reflecting a burst of spending on equipment. The unemployment rate has dropped to 6 percent from a peak of 14.8 percent in April 2020. Before the pandemic, unemployment was just 3.5 percent in February 2020. Employers are beginning to complain that they can't find workers - despite an elevated unemployment rate.
