US ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat met with BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday to gain a better understanding of Bangladesh’s current political climate. The ambassador recently met with Awami League Secretary General Obaidul Quader and will seek meetings with other political figures in the future, she said. During the two-hour meeting, BNP chief Khaleda informed the US ambassador of the country’s prevailing political situation and also discussed BNP’s proposal on the formation of the Election Commission and the recently appointed election commissioner, sources at the meeting told the Dhaka Tribune. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, and Khaleda’s adviser Riaz Rahman also attended the meeting. The BNP secretary general told the Dhaka Tribune that the meeting also included a discussion on bilateral issues, including politics, economy and bilateral relations.
