The bill failed 51-39, even though two Republican senators, both women, voted for it. New York Democrat Chuck Schumer, the Senate majority leader, voted against the bill in order for him to introduce it again. Two years after the Supreme Court ended the right to abortion,2 the conflict over reproductive rights has moved from abortion to access to contraception. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas commented in his opinion on Roe v Wade that perhaps it was time to re-examine the court ruling that granted the right to contraception. Some anti-abortion groups have said that emergency contraception and IUDs should be labelled as abortifacients.5
