Some states have elections even for court clerks, property appraisers, and tax collectors. Also on the ballot will be scores of other propositions, initiatives, and measures - from abolishing death penalty in some states to school bonds, bilingual education, smoking pot. Many first and second generation immigrants, particularly Indian-Americans, get their break in politics running for school board and other offices at the county level. After perhaps half a century of such gradual mainstreaming, some of it owing to India's own democracy, desis are poised to get a deserving head's up. Given the bitterness and rancor that has infected the year-long campaign, a close election, and worse, a controversial outcome, will result in months of partisan gridlock that could throw the rest of the world into tumult. No one knows what a Trump team will look like.
