--Carnival to improve fire, hospitality and power systems across fleet--Includes $300 million investment at namesake line alone--Follows glut of ship snafus, included powerless Carnival Triumph ship in Gulf of MexicoBy Joan E. SolsmanAfter a spate of high-profile ship mishaps, Carnival Corp. (CCL) plans to invest $600 million to $700 million to improve safety and hospitality systems during emergencies across its fleet. Twice in recent years, fires on Carnival ships stranded them off the coast of Mexico. A glut of other Carnival ship snafus lately have kept operations in an unfavorable light. Stemming from its review of the Triumph incident, Carnival Wednesday said it would be spending $300 million on all 24 of its namesake ships to increase emergency-generator power, upgrade fire systems and reconfigure engine components. The rest of its 101-ship fleet would also get these enhancements where they aren't already present, pushing the spending tab as high as $700 million.
