GENEVA: The UN human rights chief on Wednesday called for a new body tasked with preparing criminal indictments over atrocities committed in Myanmar, after a similar panel was created for the Syrian conflict. The Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council has set up multiple investigations and fact-finding missions into major trouble spots, including an active one for Myanmar. Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, addresses the Human Rights Council at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland February 26. REUTERSIn the Syrian case, the UN General Assembly voted in 2016 to set up an “independent and impartial mechanism” to prepare prosecutorial files.
