UN peacekeeping mission hot topic as Trudeau returns to Ottawa from Africa

OTTAWA—Justin Trudeau is back in Ottawa after his first visit to Africa as prime minister, but the issue of security on the continent will remain a hot topic as the Liberals get ready to reveal where they plan to send Canadian troops on a United Nations peacekeeping mission. Trudeau was in Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar, this weekend, for the summit of la Francophonie, a global organization of mainly French-speaking nations that includes some of the countries where Canada could decide to send up to 600 troops. Michaëlle Jean, the secretary-general of la Francophonie, says it was essential for the members of la Francophonie to discuss how to make peacekeeping operations more effective through greater co-operation between countries and better co-ordination of their actions. Jean, the former governor general of Canada, says they could not talk about growth and development without bringing up the need to work towards better security and stability. Trudeau is not tipping his hand, saying the issue requires rigorous analysis, but he expects to have an answer in the coming days and weeks.
