The United Nations children’s organization UNICEF has denounced an airstrike that “hit a kindergarten” in the Ethiopian region of Tigray, killing at least four people, including two children. In a statement released Saturday, UNICEF director Catherine Russell said the agency “strongly condemns” the airstrike that took place the day before in Mekele, the capital of the northern Tigray region. For almost two years, children and their families in the region have endured the pain of this conflict. Government forces accused of attacks on civilian infrastructureThe Ethiopian Air Force has been accused of hitting the residential area where the kindergarten was located, the government claims. In November 2020, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered a government offensive in Tigray in response to an attack on a military base.
