UN Secretary-General urges Libya to settle down as protests spread – Middle East Monitor

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has sought calm as street protests spread throughout Libya in protest of power cuts and the failure of national elections. According to the report, the act took place after protesters attacked parliament in the eastern city of Tobruk as anger exploded over deteriorating living conditions and political impasse. “The Secretary-General is worried about demonstrations in several cities in Libya, including Tripoli, Tobruk and Benghazi,” Guterres said in a statement. According to the statement, Guterres also urged “a gathering of Libyan actors to overcome the ongoing political impasse,” which was a negative “deepening division.”Last Saturday, Libyan UN officials also blamed the assault on parliamentary headquarters by angry demonstrators.
