Ban Ki-moon praised Macri’s “very generous and compassionate leadership” following his decision in June to take in 3,000 Syrian refugees. Ban Ki-Moon also expressed support for Malcorra as she pursues a position as his predecessor. While visiting President Mauricio Macri in Argentina, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon congratulated the head of state for agreeing to receive Syrian refugees and spoke fondly of Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra, who is currently in the running to replace Ban Ki-moon when he steps down at the end of December. Malcorra is one of the candidates in the running to succeed Ban Ki-moon and in the most recent pre-selection vote by the UN’s Security Council, she came in third. Ban Ki-moon said that he would like to “highlight the fact that Susana Malcorra was a first-rate advisor as cabinet chief in the United Nations, before she began working as a wonderful [minister] for Argentina.”Ban Ki-moon also had a private meeting with Malcorra at the Palacio San Martin yesterday afternoon.
