According to the experts, the project risks deepening harm in a region already grappling with instability. They noted that earlier liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in the region have led to loss of livelihoods, particularly for communities dependent on fishing, agriculture, and natural resources. They emphasized that international financial institutions and private sector actors are obligated under the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights to assess, prevent, and address adverse human rights impacts linked to their activities. The experts warned that continued investment in upstream fossil fuel projects risks locking countries into high-emission pathways incompatible with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
