UK rail fares to rise by 1.9%


Rail fares will increase by 1.9% this January, amid renewed calls from campaigners for the nationalisation of rail companies. Regulated rail fares will rise in line with July’s RPI inflation figure that was published on Tuesday morning. Research from the TUC published on Tuesday showed fare rises have far outstripped pay rises in recent years, with a 25% rise compared with a 12% rise in average weekly earning since 2010. The TUC general secretary, Frances O’Grady, said: “Rail passengers are paying more and getting even less. Rail fares shouldn’t rise every year though.
