Washington claims Iran is behind a succession of recent shipping attacks in the Gulf. Donald Trump said the attacks had “Iran written all over it”, while António Guterres, the UN secretary general, called for an independent investigation. Iran said the crew were being held while its inspectors determined whether it was safe for them to return to the stricken tanker. On Friday night the UK formally joined the US in attributing the attacks to Iran.
