(Feb 23): A UK government proposal to remove King Charles III’s brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, from the line of succession to the monarchy gained momentum as Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese backed the plan. “In light of recent events concerning Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, I am writing to confirm that my government would agree to any proposal to remove him from the line of royal succession,” Albanese wrote in a letter to UK premier Keir Starmer released by Downing Street on Monday morning. The former prince was arrested last week following revelations contained in emails with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein released by the US Department of Justice. While he was always unlikely to become king, Mountbatten-Windsor is still eighth in line to the throne. King Charles III stripped Mountbatten-Windsor of his remaining titles — including “prince” — in September.
