The new UK total is 12,157 - although that includes only hospital deaths with the toll feared to be far higher when fatalities in care homes are taken into account. The total figure yesterday for the UK with England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland combined was 11,344. Care England chief executive Martin Green today warned the industry is "working a bit blind" without daily figures. The ONS overall total for England, 5,979 deaths, is 15% higher than the total reported by NHS England for the same period (5,186 deaths in hospitals). The NHS figures only include deaths in hospitals where a patient has been tested for Covid-19.
