UK Parliament debate on Sri Lanka: MP calls for sanctions against gross human rights violations

During the UK Parliament’s debate on Sri Lanka which was held today, MP Siobhain McDonagh called on the UK Government to impose sanctions against those ‘credibly’ accused of gross human rights violations in Sri Lanka. MP McDonagh was one of the three MPs who put forwarded the debate on Sri Lanka. MP McDonagh asked, “Why have we not applied sanctions against those credibly accused of gross human rights violations? We must ensure a coherent approach to aid, trade and diplomatic and military engagement with Sri Lanka, consistent with the international obligations to human rights. “The High Commissioner for Human Rights should continue to monitor and report on human rights in Sri Lanka, providing recommendations to ensure justice for victims and accountability for perpetrators.
