Photo: APNew Delhi: In an effort to better understand the processes behind the monsoon, India will carry out a joint observation project with the UK, using underwater robots in the Bay of Bengal and an aircraft for atmospheric measurements. Once in the ocean, the researchers will release seven underwater gliders to measure ocean properties such as temperature, salinity and current. This data will finally be used to create computer models of the ocean to determine how it affects weather systems and rainfall over India. Matthews also hopes to better understand how the southern Asian monsoon affects climate globally. The Interaction of Convective Organization and Monsoon Precipitation, Atmosphere, Surface and Sea (INCOMPASS) project aims to capture the key surface-atmosphere feedback processes in models.
