UC Irvine in clinical trial to test drug’s potential to treat COVID-19

UCI Health scheduled an 11 a.m. news conference call to provide details. COVID-19 can involve mild to severe respiratory illness, with symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath. “There is currently no safe, effective treatment for COVID-19,” Dr. Alpesh Amin, chair of the UCI Department of Medicine and executive director of the UCI Health Hospitalist Program, said in a statement. The trial enrolled its first patients in late February at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, UCI said. UCI Health officials said they have planned since early January to prepare UCI Medical Center staff and facilities to treat patients infected with the coronavirus.
