UAE deny arresting British man for wearing Qatar football shirt

(Image: REUTERS)In the UAE there is a law against "showing sympathy" for Qatar, which covers wearing the national football team's jersey, amid diplomatic disputes between the countries. In a statement, the UAE's London embassy said Mr Ahmad was "categorically not arrested for wearing a Qatar football shirt". The embassy said Mr Ahmad was charged with wasting police time and making false statements on January 24. It added that "due process has been followed" and Mr Ahmad, an Arabic speaker, "fully understands the situation he has put himself in". Qatar will host the next World Cup in 2022 - while the country went on to win the Asian Cup earlier this month.
