The Obama administration on Friday officially blamed the Russian government for attempting to interfere in the U.S. election by hacking computers used by political groups, including the Democratic National Committee. The DNC is not identified in the statement, but a U.S. official confirmed it was one of the victims targeted by the Russian government. The assessment also determined that only “Russia’s senior-most officials could have authorized these activities ... based on the scope and sensitivity of these efforts.”Previously, intelligence officials had privately blamed Russia but would not do so openly. U.S. officials suspect the Russian government is behind those cyberattacks, too, law enforcement sources have said. However, the intelligence community is “not now in a position to attribute this activity to the Russian government,” the statement said.
