The U.S. is on the verge of significantly increasing its military support of Taiwan with a new bill that could provide Taiwan with billions in military aid, expedited arms sales and elevated status as a major ally. Beijing has threatened “extremely serious consequences” over the Taiwan Policy Act of 2022, which the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved on Wednesday. “China is fierce, but not crazy,” said Chieh Chung, a security analyst at the Taipei-based National Policy Foundation think tank. He said planning documents and past drills of China’s military demonstrate the People’s Liberation Army is very aware of the likelihood that the U.S. military would defend Taiwan if China were to invade. The Taiwan Policy Act is likely to increase the worries of those in the latter category.
